she couldn't afford therapy

Hey friend,

Monday again 😴 and today was a busy day

I spoke to 7 parents who joined our annual coaching program

A mother from Australia said a story I told broke her heart

So, I'm going to share it here with you... (you can watch the full story in the second video)

When I started off working at an ABA centre 10 years ago

A family joined the clinic hoping to do 5 months of therapy

Why so little? Because they couldn't afford it

The father, who was a police officer, used up his savings to pay for our service.s

You see, ABA therapy isn't cheap - it does cost an arm and a leg.

3,000 USD a month, to be exact, and this was 10 years ago as well!

My supervisor back then decided to teach the mother as well

I was in for a hell of a ride... Because I wasn't only teaching the child, the mother was also sitting in every session

That's why I'm such a huge advocate of parents joining in therapy

Now, this trained me to teach what I had just learned to the mother

I don't think many therapists have the appetite for parent training...

Because it took a lot of my bandwidth - it was very stressful (for all of us)

But the clock was ticking, so we had to make it work

This child came in non-verbal - after 4 months, he spoke in sentences

He walked out school-ready, and the mother was a capable therapist

So much so that my supervisor said she'd rather hire that mother than me!πŸ˜‚

Now you know why I always say you will do a better job than I ever would

Therapy is expensive. There's no way around it.

However, prioritizing resources to teach the parent is always a good idea.

The mother added me as a friend on Facebook.

I see that her child has caught up and has friends, and I don't see why he was diagnosed with moderate ASD.

Of course, not everyone's story is the same.

But you won't know until you try.

See you,

Ming

P.S. - Our annual coaching program is now open year-round, so you won't have to wait. This month, our topic is Sentence Building. So, if you want to join our teaching session + Q&A inside the group. Please do so before Friday 😎
